Residents across Pune, including Ambegaon, Lohegaon, Ravet, Alandi Kalas road, Vishrantwadi, Dhanori, Dighi, and Narhe, shared their frustration over the repeated and prolonged power outages amid a rise in temperatures.
Meanwhile, The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has claimed that in March alone, 8 major fire incidents near power installations disrupted electricity supply to over 7.65 lakh consumers.
Nishikant Raout, PRO of MSEDCL, speaking to the Free Press Journal, said, “Due to a major fire incident near the transformers, substations, and high-tension power lines in the particular areas.”
Between February 23 and March 28, five serious fire incidents occurred under Maha Transco’s Tower lines in Chakan, Hinjewadi, and Bhosari. These outages impacted the power supply to nearly 5.96 lakh domestic, commercial, and industrial customers, with the rest affected in other parts of the city.
The MSEDCL team has reported that food waste dumps near substations attract animals like rats, snakes, and birds. Animals come in contact with electrical appliances, resulting in short circuits that lead to power outages.

What is the relation of garbage dumping with power cuts?
Meanwhile, MSEDCL has appealed to the residents that the transformers around their houses and public places in the city and rural areas should be kept clean. They should not throw garbage around the transformers as the garbage can catch fire during summer. Similarly, they should not burn the garbage around the electricity system.
It has been observed that the residents throw garbage near electricity wires, feeder pillars, transformers, distribution boxes, DP and other electricity equipment. If the garbage around the electricity system catches fire, it may pose a serious threat to the residents. Similarly, the residents may face the inconvenience of power failure due to the damage to the underground cables and the electricity systems.
The residents more often burn the garbage due to which the electricity system may get damaged. The overhead wires also get burnt due to the burning of the garbage heaps.
MSEDCL has taken adequate safety measures by putting a security grill around the transformers. Still, the residents throw waste food and other garbage inside the grills and the security compound. The rats, cats, birds and other insects gather due to the waste food there and cut the wires, which increases the danger of short circuits.
In case of fire incidents, the residents should immediately contact the 24-hour toll-free numbers of MSEDCL 1912, 1800-212-34365 or 1800-233-3435.
