MCD Election Results Live Updates: AAP wrests power from BJP, wins 134 seats; Arvind Kejriwal promises ‘corruption-free’ MCD

In the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ousted the BJP on Wednesday, taking control of important civic areas like garbage management, elementary education, and property tax collection. Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister, expressed gratitude to the electorate for AAP’s win and requested the BJP and Congress’ assistance as well as the “blessings” of the federal government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in order to improve public facilities.

The AAP won 134 of the 250 wards in the MCD, while the BJP won 104, the Congress won 9, and others gained 3. 77 of the 134 seats that the AAP gained were taken away from the BJP. These 77 wards are distributed throughout rural and outside Delhi as well as wealthier neighbourhoods like Civil Lines, RK Puram, and Hauz Khas. Additionally, they range from residential communities like Chittaranjan Park and Mayur Vihar to commercial hubs like Chandni Chowk and Sadar Bazar. On the other hand, the AAP had previously controlled 14 of the 104 seats the BJP won.

This was the first election since the MCD was reunified earlier this year. Just over 73 lakh people, or 50.48% of the 1.45 crore eligible voters who were present at the polls on December 4, cast ballots. Despite gaining fewer seats this time around, the BJP boosted its vote share, but the AAP was able to significantly increase its vote share as compared to the 2017 MCD elections.
