Cong-leads 11 political parties stage protest in Delhi over delimitation

Guwahati: A delegation of 11 political parties, headed by Congress, from Assam on Friday staged a sit-in protest in front of the office of Election Commission of India ,(ECI) after they were not allowed to meet the chief election commissioner.

They went to submit a memorandum in opposition to the draft delimitation.

Speaking to media persons, Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah said, “We have written a couple of letters to the chief election commissioner regarding our opposition to the delimitation draft. After getting no response and since the delegation is in New Delhi, we wanted to meet the chief election commissioner and submit a memorandum to highlight our objections. But we were not allowed to meet him and later submit the memorandum at the reception counter,”.

The delegation later submitted the memorandum with nine objections to the draft delimitation.

The delegation unanimously said as the country-wise delimitation process will be undertaken in 2026, the present proposed delimitation process in Assam, which appears suspicious, is not considered necessary at all now.

The delegation through the memorandum urged the ECI to consider the matter and stop the delimitation process for present as “the matter is very vital and sensitive for a very sensitive border state of the country”.
