Assam: Six Himalayan Griffon vultures found dead in Lakhimpur’s Dhakuakhana

Guwahati, Feb 25: Six Himalayan Griffon vultures were found dead in a paddy field at Dhakuakhana sub-division in Lakhimpur district on Friday.

The birds were found dead at Pagalipathar area in Bagicha village. Members of “Pu En Fo Wild”, a local wildlife organisation with the help of locals rescued two ‘ill’ vultures from the site and took them to the Dhakuakhana veterinary hospital for treatment.

According to veterinarian Dr Rupam Gogoi, the two vultures have recovered after treatment. The birds were administered injection and saline drops.

The autopsy of the dead vultures will be carried out to ascertain the cause of their death. It is suspected that the vultures died after consuming a carcass of a dog which was allegedly poisoned to death. The carcass of the dog was found close to the dead birds.

“The vultures started dropping dead after consuming the carcass of the dog which we suspected was laced with poison by miscreants. Locals are also greatly saddended by the incident. We hope the culprits are nabbed soon,” said a local.
