Mumbai: As the road concretisation work progresses across the city and suburbs, the risk of damage to existing underground pipelines has increased. To tackle this issue, the BMC has decided to replace old pipelines and lay new ones wherever necessary, in line with the ongoing roadwork.
A tender has been invited for the repair, leakage repair, and replacement of pipelines in the western and eastern suburbs. The estimated cost of the project is approximately Rs. 309 crore, and the work will be carried out across 15 of the 24 administrative wards in Mumbai.
A leak detection, repair, and pipeline replacement project will be carried out in suburban areas such as Kurla, Ghatkopar, Bhandup, Mulund, Chembur, Bandra, Malad, Kandivli, Borivali, Goregaon, and Dahisar, with completion expected within the next two years.
Approximately 20,438 tasks will be undertaken as part of this initiative. The civic body has initiated cement concreting work in several areas, along with it a contractors have been appointed for the relocation of water pipelines in areas such as Bandra East and Andheri East, with a budget allocation of Rs. 76 crore for the project.
The BMC currently supplies 3,950 million litres of water per day, while the demand has risen to 4,463 million litres. Approximately 34% of water is lost due to leakages, evaporation, pilferage, and theft.
The civic body sources water for the city from lakes located in the Thane and Nashik districts, transported through a pipeline network that spans nearly 5,000 km across Mumbai. To prevent further leakages and contamination, the BMC has laid down a 95 km tunnel network, with work on an additional 20 km underway.
